(850) 488-5394 TALLAHASSEE - Governor Jeb Bush awarded United Christian Giving of Southwest
Florida the Governor’s Points of Light Award. The award recognizes
exemplary volunteer and community service throughout the state. “United
Christian Giving’s success in securing funds for other faith-based
organizations is inspiring,” Governor Bush said. “Founder Frank
Helmerich’s dedication should be commended.” United
Christian Giving offers grants and scholarships to other faith-based
groups and initiatives. Since 1997, it has provided more than $120,000 to
help fund over 20 faith-based organizations undertaking community
projects. Since its inception, twelve faith-based organizations have
received $10,000 in endowment funds for the betterment of their
communities. Through United Christian Giving, college scholarships were
awarded to high school students in conjunction with Florida’s “Take
Stock in Children” program. Helmerich,
48, is hoping to expand the organization nationwide. “It is my goal to
raise as much as $20 million so that we can continue to help the people
and the communities that benefit from our endeavors,” he said. The
Governor’s Points of Light Award, sponsored by Royal Caribbean
International and Celebrity Cruises, recognizes a Florida resident or
organization that demonstrates exemplary service to the community. A panel
of judges, comprised of leaders in the areas of volunteerism and service,
evaluate incoming nominations and make recommendations to the Governor.
The Florida Commission on Community Service is a Governor-appointed
commission dedicated to the inclusion of persons with disabilities in
national service. The Commission promotes volunteerism and service
throughout the state and administers the award. |
